Neon Obscura

A film recipe simulates the stunning scenes from Hong Kong movies using your Fujifilm camera and neon lights

Mood: Cinematic, Low-Light, Neon

Neon Obscura, is one of the most versatile cinematic film recipes ever created. Creating unique and outstanding Fujifilm recipes can be a challenging and complicated process that often requires some dedication and experimentation. It takes a lot of trial and error to produce a recipe that stands out and truly captures the desired mood and atmosphere. Therefore, after years of practice, persistence, and passion, I am thrilled to share with you my latest masterpiece: the phenomenal cinematic film recipe, Neon Obscura.

Out of all the low-light film simulation recipes that I have created over the years, I must say, without a doubt, that this one is, hands down, my absolute favorite. I am particularly enthusiastic about this recipe because I’ve always had trouble replicating the stunning night scenes from Hong Kong movies. However, since the inception of this recipe, I can confidently say that capturing the vivacity and energy of those scenes has become a reality.

This unique and mesmerizing recipe is inspired by the iconic works of Wong Kar Wai, not 100% the same but similar. For more similar tone to WKW movie tone, check out the Teal Obscure recipe. I have been trying all the time but failed. I’m pleased to present this recipe; Neon Obscura is the perfect tool to add an extra touch of magic to your night shoots. It is developed explicitly for low-light conditions, which makes it the perfect recipe if you want to achieve cinematic-looking nighttime shots.

Understanding Neon Obscura Cinematic Film Recipe

The Neon Obscura cinematic film recipe is an exceptional choice for those seeking a perfect blend of cinematic effects while shooting at night. The recipe is derived from one of the most reliable Fujifilm recipes and also from one of the Japanese film-like recipes, which has undergone extensive fine-tuning and re-evaluation to achieve the exact perfect blend of settings. Based on the Classic Negative film simulation, the Neon Obscura recipe has been designed to deliver an amazing array of visual effects that heighten the overall appeal of your film.

Unique adjustments have been made, with a particular focus on white balance settings, which help to bring out the true beauty of your images. Whether you’re a fan of the portrait or street photography, this recipe is guaranteed to get you stunning visuals even in low-light situations.

Sometimes, the film grain settings may be too dominant for night shoots. I would recommend adjusting it to small/weak or turning it off completely for smoother images. It ultimately depends on what effect you want to achieve. Do you want a vintage look? Then maximize the film grain to strong! There are no hard and fast rules when shooting with the Neon Obscura.

Most of the sample images were shot with the SIRUI Sniper 23mm f1.2, which has an inherent cine lens from the SIRUI Nightwalker. I like how cinematic these images look at night. If you are trying to achieve this kind of feel in your night scenes, Neon Obscura is the best choice.

Neon Obscura is a highly versatile and dynamic artistic medium that truly comes to life in the presence of specific lighting conditions. To fully experience the vibrant and captivating displays offered by Neon Obscura, it is important to consider the type of lighting that will be used in the space. For optimal results, Neon Obscura works best when under white tungsten lighting or colorful neon lights.

Achieving Cinematic Results With Neon Obscura

In summary, the Neon Obscura cinematic film recipe stands as a versatile tool capable of seamlessly translating your creative vision into reality. Whether you seek to infuse your project with an air of darkness and mystery, cyberpunk or aim for vibrant and captivating portrait photoshoots, Neon Obscura excels in replicating the atmospheric allure of a cinematic movie scene. This recipe serves as a bridge between your artistic vision and the captivating visual narratives inspired by the magic of cinema. Check out my recent neon light photography for more samples.
